September marks the kickoff to a whole new slew
of TV shows that you won’t want to miss. Viewers have a diverse and
wide-ranging lineup to choose from this year, including political dramas,
family comedies, and even a spinoff to a long-beloved cop show. Here are 14 new
series premieres to catch this month.
1. Houdini (History
Channel)
This
two-part, four-hour miniseries on the History Channel stars Adrien Brody as
legendary illusionist and escape artist Harry Houdini. The series will follow
the now-renowned magician on his lengthy journey from poverty to international
fame, illustrating his growing abilities to master the art of illusion and take
on even the most dangerous, death-defying stunts along the way. The
much-buzzed-about miniseries also features Kristen Connolly, Eszter Onodi, Tom
Benedict Knight, and Jeremy Wheeler, and is slated to premiere on September 1
at 9 p.m.
2. The Chair (Starz)
Part docu-series, part
reality competition, this upcoming Starz show follows two first-time directors,
YouTube comedian Shane Dawson and writer/actress Anna Martemucci, as they make
a movie using the same exact script and budget. Actor Zachary Quinto acts as
their mentor as they work on creating the films, and eventually both movies get
a limited theatrical release when the TV series runs. Viewers will vote on
which of the two filmmakers made the better film and the winner earns a
$250,000 prize. The show is set to air on September 6 at 11 p.m.
3. Z Nation (SyFy)
SyFy’s new
zombie show, Z Nation, follows a group of survivors three years
after a zombie virus has spread across the country. The group has to join
together to transport the only known survivor of the plague 3,000 miles,
from New York to California, which is where the last functioning viral lab is
located. His antibodies are the only world’s only hope at a vaccine, but what
the others don’t know is that the survivor is harboring a secret of his own.
The 13-episode first season premieres on September 12 at 10 p.m.
4. Red Band Society (Fox)
The
upcoming Fox dramedy is based on the Spanish drama Polseres
Vermelles and follows a group of six young patients staying in the
hospital long-term for treatment of a variety of diseases. Described as a blend
between The Breakfast Club and Orange is the New
Black, the show also showcases the staff members who oversee their care
and help guide them through their time at the medical center. The series stars
Oscar winner Octavia Spencer in the role as the hospital’s lead nurse and is
slated to premiere on September 17 at 9 p.m.
5. NCIS: New Orleans (CBS)
The latest NCIS show
revolves around officers in a New Orleans field office who investigate
criminal cases involving military personnel in the city, which seems to be just
as dangerous as it is fun. While the city may be often known as party central,
it also seems to be where many service members on leave find themselves in
trouble. The CBS cop drama features Scott Bakula as Special Agent Dwayne Pride,
Lucas Black as Special Agent Christopher LaSalle, and Zoe McLellan as a
recently transferred agent Meredith “Merri” Brody. It will premiere on
September 23 at 9 p.m.
6. Madam
Secretary (CBS)
In this
new CBS political drama, Tea Leoni stars as Elizabeth McCord, a tough and
determined newly appointed secretary of state who is forced to battle office
politics in order to drive international diplomacy, negotiate global issues,
and make effective change. In addition to staying on top of her numerous, complex
professional responsibilities, she must also deal with a complicated personal
life. The series also stars Tim Daley, Bebe Neuwirth, and Geoffrey Arend. It’s
scheduled to premiere on September 21 at 8 p.m.
7. Scorpion (CBS)
The
upcoming CBS drama series is based on the true story of real-life IT genius
Walter O’Brien and his international network of fellow geniuses, all of whom
help battle the complex threats to modern society. Elyes Gabel stars as Walter,
while Katherine McPhee plays the female lead role of Paige, a diner waitress
who somehow understands the team of intellectuals and becomes a kind of
interpreter for the often socially misunderstood group. The show also
features Robert Patrick and Eddie Kaye Thomas, and will make its debut on
September 22 at 9 p.m.
8. Gotham (Fox)
Fox’s Batman-themed
prequel series explores the background of eventual Gotham City Police
Commissioner James Gordon (Ben McKenzie). As evidenced by previews for the upcoming
show, the series also chronicles some of the origin stories behind other
characters like the Penguin, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, the Joker, the Riddler, and,
of course, the Caped Crusader himself. Fox has preemptively released a
21-minute inside look at the series, presumably to garner some extra buzz
around the show, but the 16-episode first season isn’t set to officially debut
until September 22 at 8 p.m.
