A Final End to HIV???University Scientists Successfully Eliminate HIV Virus In Human Cells (DETAILS)
In
2012, an estimated 2.3 million individuals worldwide were newly infected with
HIV, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Many have prayed to see
the day a cure is found – and those prayers may soon be answered.
Researchers
at Temple University in Philadelphia have found a way to destroy HIV and AIDs
by operating on the DNA system. Professor and Chair of the Department of
Neuroscience, Dr. Kamel Khalili, talks with CBS about how they did it:
“Basically converting infected cells to
un-infected cells and that is very important because the current therapy can
not eliminate the virus from cells…we have a cure for HIV elimination. We have
a system to eliminate HIV from the cells in the laboratory.”
According
to CBS Local, it’s now just a matter of bringing the system of elimination
discovery to life with clinical trials on animals and eventually humans.
According
to Dr. Khalili, there is not a specific period that the discovery will make its
way to clinical trials, however many people are tuned in to see what will
happen next and if the HIV and AIDs epidemic has finally come to an end.
